Sunday was the day of our departure. I can’t remember exactly when we had to wake up, but it was very early, around 4 AM maybe. It was dark when we left our hotel and the sun was just starting to rise when we arrived at the airport. I do remember being in line at immigration for a while, waiting for an officer to arrive, but on the whole the trip out was uneventful. We travelled on to Nadi, Fiji to get our connecting flight to Kiribati.
Oh, and one post-script from this trip: I actually came home with the paper money and returned to the bank I got it from, hopeful to exchange it back into Australian Dollars. They didn’t take it back, as it was no longer legal tender. Of course they were fine enough giving it to me. I ripped the money up then and there and someone at the teller beside me asked what I was doing. “Fake money,” she asked. “Old money,” I replied.
