RA-V Missions

Funafuti, Tuvalu

Next day was a little more typical. We worked the day and then afterwards asked whether it was possible to hire a car to look around a little. I can’t remember if it was someone at the met service or someone at the hotel, but they had a car that he could lend us. It has seen better days — the steering wheel was installed 90° from it’s normal position — but it served us well.

Princess Margaret Hospital

Looking at the photos now, we may have went out twice: once during the afternoon and once during the evening, attempting to reach both ends of the island. We tried to get as much as we could before the light faded, but unfortunately it got too dark to cover everything. I do remember us getting petrol for the car, which involved driving to someone with a bunch of barrels, a jerry can and a funnel.

Anyway, evening set in, and we were pretty tired, but the hotel was hosting a live band of sorts (they did this twice a week), and they were playing directly outside our rooms. We stayed a little but it got too loud for us, and we went back to the met office to stay with those working the night shift. The band was still playing when we arrived back at the hotel at midnight. They eventually stopped at 12:30, and we managed to get a bit of sleep (although not much, we were pretty tired the next day).

The live music. It was actually quite a decent setup, although I can’t remember what type of music it was.
Taking refuge in the met service until the end of the show.
